Fuji Hybrid Camera Photography CoursesI have a Digital bridge / hybrid type camera with an electronic viewfinder so which digital photography course is best for me?

Technically hybrid or bridge cameras are a cross between a compact camera and a Digital SLR. However they tend to only have a very limited range of apertures and do not have removable lens. For this reason we suggest you attend the bridge & compact course rather than an DSLR course. The exceptions to this advice are if you have the new Panasonic Lumix G1 or if you are seriously thinking about buying a DSLR in the near future.

Are they closer to DSLR or Compact Camera?

Hybrid or Bridge cameras look like a small Digital SLR but unlike a DSLR you cannot remove the lens and change it to a wide angle or telephoto lens. Most bridge cameras do have a very wide zoom range, often up to an 24x zoom, which can be very useful for nature photography. They actually have much more in common with a compact camera.

With a Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) the image you see through the viewfinder is reflected by a mirror from behind the lens up into the viewfinder. With a bridge camera this image is recorded by the sensor and shown on a small TV monitor inside the viewfinder, rather like in a video camera, or onto the display at the back of the camera.

Like a compact camera they also have a much smaller sensor than a DSLR which, for technical reasons we will not go into here, means the quality in lower light is less than that of a DSLR.

Large zoom range

The advantage of these cameras over a normal compact, or DSLR with it's standard zoom, is they usually have a 10 -18 times optical zoom compared to the normal 3 to 5 times zoom on a standard compact camera. On a 10x zoom this is the equivalent of a zoom lens on a DSLR of 35mm to 350mm. Some newer models actually have up to a 20x zoom which equates to a 600-700mm lens. This is the sort of lens used by sports or nature photographers.

Before you all rush out and buy one there is a downside. At these extreme settings the lens lets in very little light which means you will need to use a slow shutter speed which means a good chance of camera shake or subject movement. The smaller sensor also results in grainier pictures in low light.

Exposure Modes

All DSLRs will have a full range of exposure modes - Full Auto, Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual. Most Hybrid or Bridge Cameras are quite advanced and have many of the same setting found on an SLR camera but tend to have a very limited aperture range.

So should I attend the compact or SLR course?

We recommend the bridge /compact camera courses for bridge/ hybrid camera users but a lot depends on how you use your camera.

    • setting your camera correctly
    • understanding the menus
    • tips on taking better photographs
    • Transferring images to a PC
    • Basic image corrections.

If you have a Panasonic Lumix G1, are a very keen hobbyist photographer, or you are planning to upgrade to a digital SLR at a later date, then you could attend the Digital SLR course. These courses are aimed at getting photographers off the full auto setting. They concentrate on:

    • Setting your camera correctly
    • Understanding the menus
    • Setting the best ISO, quality & image settings
    • shutter speed & aperture combination
    • Stop movement in action photography
    • Using depth of field in landscape photography

Important Note: You may not have access to all the settings and facilities taught on the DLSR course so we do suggest you either attend a compact camera course or the dedicated hybrid bridge camera course we are planning to run in the summer. Click here to be notified of future dates.

If you are still unsure which course to attend then either give us a call on 0116 279 6906 or email glen@glentillyard.co.uk
