Creative lighting Course - Sun 26th November 2017 - Spaces

During this photography course you will learn how to take:

Pictures from the Previous Creative Flash Course

Student Gallery from the Creative Lighting Course in February 2012

Nikon SB800 flashgun

Using the camera's built in flash can result in pictures which are flat and uninteresting. The Creative Lighting Photography Course aims to change this scenario and will give you a good understanding of how to use a separate flashgun away from the camera to provide more creative and interesting lighting.

Ideally you will require a separate flashgun and a remote trigger to fire the flash off the camera. You can use our flash kit if required but you not be able to repeat the techniques at home without your own equipment.

Nikon Flashguns - SB600, SB700, SB800, SB900 or SB910

Nikon SB800 flashgunA separate flashgun with a flash extension lead is a really useful accessory for this course, but not essential, as we will be able to demonstrate using our equipment. I also recommend a tripod and remote cable release if possible.

The SB600 can only be controlled as a remote slave flash only but all the others can be used as a master & a slave flash. This will be explained on the course.

Canon Flashguns - 430EX, 580EX or 600EX (or EX11's)

Canon 430 EX

A separate flashgun with a flash extension lead is a really useful accessory for this course, but not essential, as we will be able to demonstrate using our equipment. I also recommend a tripod and remote cable release if possible.

The 430EX can only be controlled as a remote slave flash but all the others can be used as a master & a slave flash. This will all be explained on the course.

Third Party Flashguns

Just like buying third party lenses from Tamron or Sigma it's also possible to buy flash guns from makers like Metz, Nissin, Yongnuo and others. I have to admit I have not had a lot of dealings with some of these other makes so please ensure you let me know which gun you have so I can research your model before the course. You need to buy the correct model and fitting for your camera. Please also bring your instruction manual.

Yongnuo YN-568EX TTL SpeedliteFlash with High Speed Sync

Yongnuo are well known for their virtual clone models of Canon flashguns and accessories but they also make models to fit Nikons.
Up until recently Yongnuos lacked High Speed Sync (HSS) which is the ability to be able to use fast shutter speeds outdoors for fill flash.
This was something I really missed until the Yongnuo YN-568EX TTL Flash came along and allows HSS to be used on cameras like the Nikon D7000 series and above.

Firing an Off Camera Flash

This can be done with an extension cable, a radio transmiiter and receiver or system using the pop up flash built into some cameras - like the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS).

Try doing a search for 10m TTL Flash Cord on eBay or visit a your local camera store. Thay are about £30

They are more commonly available in 3m lengths for about £15 but these are really a bit too short though you could join two together.

Yongnuo YN-622N or 622c TTL Wireless Flash Triggers

TTL Wireless Flash Trigger Transceiver For Nikon or Canon at about £55

Using Digital FSK 2.4GHz frequency band with 7 channels, it has three modes, i-TTL, Manual and Multi, and it can fire flashes at 360 degree direction, the operating range is 100 metres. It supports FEC, FEB, FEL, High-speed Sync, 1st. Curtain, 2nd. Which is the best Nikon flash gun to buy?

I'm only going to comment on the dedicated Nikon flashguns as I have never used the other brands.

Nikon SB700 Speedlite About About £230.00

MushroomsThis Speedlite uses Nikons latest i-TTL metering technology for spot on exposures, It's a powerful but sensible priced main flash for general photography. The SB-700 also offers fully automatic exposure control when used in groups with other SB-700 Speedlites, controlled either by a Master SB-800 or the new Commander function of the new DSLRs like the D300, D700,D7000, D90 and D3s.

NIKON SB900 Speedlite
About: £325
The powerful and versatile Nikon SB900 Speedlite is a professional i-TTL Speedlite compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System (NCLS). These means it can be used in a multiple flash set up with other SB900s or SB600 to allow for several creative lighting scenarios for portrait or product photography. The power output and exposure can be controlled through the pop up flash and CLS menu on the Nikon D300 and D700 or by another SB900 or transmitter on the D3s.

CANON Speedlite 580EX II about £375.00
This professional level speedlite is powerful and versatile with a bounce head and the ability to be a master or slave flash in a multiple lighting set-up. It's the ideal companion to any of the enthusiast through to pro cameras.

The Canon Speedlite 430EX II £199.99 is the baby brother to the 580 EX and as such is slightly less powerful. It can be used as a slave unit when used in conjunction with a 580 EXll or a transmitter. This flash would be a good choice for one of the amateur systems.

Can I use these flashguns remotely?

The speedlite can be used with a remote wireless transmitter which will fire several flash guns. This is useful for multiple flash lighting set-ups for portraits and product protography.

Student Testimonials

Great course and really enjoyed it. I will be attending another one soon. Steve Bluett

I thought this course might not be a lot of use to me but how wrong I was. I now have something to keep me occupied on those dreary wet days. If you are in any doubt then come on this course. It’s well worth it.
Dave Allen

Great course as always. Much better idea about lighting and using the flash. Di Norwood.

I learnt a great deal from the course content and also through questioning Glen who invariably knew the answer and explained techniques and aspects related to my camera both fully and carefully. I feel considerably more confident in managing my flashgun now and I look forward to practising the skills. Peter Lawrance.

Excellent course which packed a lot in as usual. I can’t wait to try the techniques out at home. My mind is buzzing with ideas. Chris Bluett.

A good course where I learnt a lot in the day. I’m looking forward to doing the next course. Paul Stanley
