Helen Abstract

This month's project is Abstract Photography.

This type of photography involves taking pictures of objects to show their form, colour, pattern or shape rather than any particular recognizable detail.

It can often be achieved by zooming in on a section rather than looking at the whole subject. It is a very useful technique for encouraging the photographer, and the viewer, to look at the world differently. Consider looking at a small part of a building and concentrate on any patterns, curves reflections. The trick with abstract photography is to make the view look twice to try and interpret the work. This could be a close-up of a plant, an out of focus splash of yellow against a blue sky or the curves and shadows of an everyday object.

Snow Pictures

The weather forecasters reckon snow is on the way so pop on a woolly hat and scarf and get out there and take some nice wintry white imagery.

Try to get out early, so the low sun can highlight the textures and shadows, and while the snow is still smooth and crisp. If you can find people tobogganing then try a slow 1/30th shutter speed on the S or TV setting and pan the camera to get a good sense of movement.

Remember to use the exposure compensation to add about 1 stop of extra light so you get nice white snow. If you find your results look a bit blue then change the white balance to cloudy or shade.

This Month's Project - Spot Colour

This month's project is Spot Colour on a Monochrome image. This is sometimes known as focal B&W or colour popping.

You have probably seen it as a red rose on a black and white wedding picture. This can be done in Photoshop by using a monochrome layer on top of a colour layer on top and then erasing the mono pixels so the colour below shows through.

You can also use a Hue and Saturation Adjustment Layer to De-Saturate the image then apply a mask to apply black to the colour area so it shows through.

A quicker way is to use the Focal B&W command in Picasa.

If you only have Picasa the simply go the Effects Tab and choose Focal B&W. You can move the colour area and change how sharp the transition is by moving the sliders.

Have fun and I look forward to seeing your results.

What a day!

A very enjoyable and informative course in good company. I had a really great time and I shall no longer be afraid to try the different modes built into the camera. It’s brilliant to get off the Full Auto setting.
