Can you believe it's 2012 already? I hope you all had a good Christmas and Santa got you everything you wanted. If not then don't worry there are now only another 357 more more shopping days until Christmas all over again.

This month's project is Monochrome. As the trees have lost their leaves and the colours have become more muted it is a good time to try your hand at Black and White photography. I've also included a Picasa tutorial to get you started.

New Creative Lighting Course

Bokah

I've had lots of people ask about water splash, smoke and taking abstract pictures so I've launch a new Creative Lighting Course covering these topics. This course is normally only run as a 121 private tuition day so this is the first time as a group course of four students. Two of these spaces are already taken so for those of you who got a new separate flashgun this, or the portrait course, is a good opportunity to try it out.

  • How to use Off Camera Flash
  • A Water Splash under various lighting scenarios
  • Smoke under various lighting scenarios
  • Painting with light spirographs
  • Bokah Photography - Out of Focus Light Points
  • Blending images in photoshop

Portrait Course

Students are increasingly asking how to take portraits using home studio flash kits with white & black backgrounds so we are adding this to the course itinerary. There will also be the chance to try out various professional flash techniques using bounced & direct flash. Your own dedicated flashgun with a bounce head & a tripod are really useful additions for this course.

During this photography course you will learn how to take:

  • A portrait outside without flash
  • A portrait outside with fill in flash
  • A portrait indoors without flash
  • A portrait indoors with flash
  • A portrait indoors with off camera flash
  • A portrait indoors using bounce flash
  • A portrait indoors by window light
  • A moody low key portrait with a black background
  • A light high key portrait with a white background
  • A portrait indoors by studio flash and a white background
  • A Portrait indoors by studio flash and a black background

This Month's Project - Monochrome

Henley boats Colour Boats BW

Frosty mornings and the low sun creating long shadows make great black and white images so this months project is to upload monochrome pictures to the Facebook group. If you have access to full Photoshop then there are lots of different methods to create a mono image but here a just a few.

  • Image - Mode- Grayscale
  • Image - Adjustments - De saturate
  • Image - Adjustments - Channel Mixer - Monochrome

All these methods will produce different results so try them all. They might need as bit of an extra boost in contrast by using the Level (CTRL L) command.

If you only have Picasa the simply go the the Effects Tab and choose B&W. Now choose the Tuning Tab and play with the Highlights, Fill and Shadows sliders until you get the look you want. Have fun and I look forward to seeing your results.

It's a new year, and we are reaching the limit of the number of subscribers we can have to the newsletter, so rather than keep bugging you with it if all you do is delete it then it would be better if you unsubscribe. Obviously we are delighted to have you on board but if you prefer you can simply unsubscribe by clicking the link at the foot of this email.

Happy New Year and very best wishes
