I would like to buy a Digital SLR but I’m confused which one to buy.
Buying a digital SLR is an expensive commitment and it can be difficult to choose one. The main players are Canon and Nikon with Pentax, Sony and Olympus all offering good value alternatives.
If extra lenses are important then there are a greater choice of Canon and Nikon branded and compatible options from Tamron and Sigma.

Midweek Photography Tuition from £135 > Book Now
Most of our One Day Photography courses have six students using a variety of Digital SLR cameras.
As we need to cater for a range of cameras and abilities these courses need to be more generic and structured so we can fit everything into the day. We cover the functions and menus common to most makes and models of camera but if you would like to delve deeper in to the controls and settings of your particular camera then a private tuition day would probably be better for you.
Weekday Photography Courses - Monday to Friday
Most of our group photography courses are run at weekends be we also run courses on a 221 or 321 basis Monday to Friday for student who have attended a previous beginners course with us. These are normally organised through members on the Facebook Group.
Available Courses (Others on request)
- Portrait & Home Studio Photography Course
- Scenic HDR and RAW Photography Course
- Urban HDR and RAW Photography Course
- Creative Lighting Flash Photography Course
- Night & Low Light Photography Course
- Intermediate Photography Course
- Macro & Close-up Photography course
- Advanced Photography by arrangement
If booking a 221 or 321 photography course please contact me first so we can fix a suitable date for all parties..
- Please ensure all members can attend on the chosen date. If anyone drops out then the course may need to be rearranged.
- For a trial period we have a price of £199 each for 221s & £135 for 321s. After this period the 321 price increases to £175 in line with our normal private tuition prices shown on the website. This is to avoid different prices for the same courses on different pages.
- These offers are for existing students only and do not apply to beginners courses or for anyone who hasn't attended a previous course with us.
Beginners Photography Course - Private Tuition
Private one to one photography tuition is just you, me and your camera. These courses are specially tailored to your personal requirements and specific digital camera. We recommend the private tuition option if you prefer the 121 option or you feel you may not keep up with the other members of a group (probably not true), like to ask lots of questions as the day progresses, or you have a specific interest which may not be covered on the group course.
More Training & Photography Time than a Group Course
Everything from the normal beginners photography course, and some of the intermediate one day group photography courses, is covered plus the practical photography sessions are about twice as long. You can see some picture from previous students here.
Intermediate Photography Tuition & Level Two Courses
If you have already attended one of our Beginners Photography Courses, or you are a more experienced photographer, then we have a wide range of Intermediate and Level Two Photography Courses including: Macro Photography, Portrait Photography, Night Photography, RAW and HDR, Flash Photography, Creative Lighting Courses, Landscape Photography, Bird Photography and a Professional Photography Course for those who would like to earn an income from their photography.
Photography Private Tuition on Saturday or Sunday £450
Please Note: Saturdays & Sundays are generally reserved for the group photography courses, with six students, or my professional photography assignments. Private tuition days generally take place during the week but I do occasionally run private tuition courses on a Saturday or Sunday. The cost for this exclusive training is £399 for one person or £499 for two people. If you do wish to attend on a Saturday or Sunday then please email me first or call 0116 2796906 to see if we can arrange a suitable private tuition photography course date.
One to One Courses have twice the photography time
The group Digital SLR photography courses take place in the village of Smeeton Westerby whereas the private tuition photography courses usually take place at the nearby tourist attraction of Foxton Locks. As I don't have to split my time between six students, all with different cameras, the actual photography time is about twice that of the group courses and includes everything in our beginners & some of the intermediate course. These camera courses will suit anyone from the complete beginner to the intermediate DSLR photographer.
Book a Private Tuition Photography Course from £325
Private Tuition Courses are also available with a "bring a friend" option so two students can attend for £450 during the week or £650 at the weekend. Please choose the two person option above. Private Tuition Courses can include some Photoshop as part of the course at the loss of some photography time. This can be replaced with Picasa training if you would like to simply learn how to file, save, email and print your pictures.
Get your camera off the full auto setting
Many novice photographers tend to use their expensive DSLR on the fully auto setting and are often unimpressed by the average results achieved. This one day photography course will demonstrate when to use all the other settings and how to take fantastic photographs you would be proud to hang on your wall. During these courses we will encourage you to break a few photography stereotypes and look at the world slightly differently so you will take pictures that grab peoples attention..
All our Digital SLR photography courses start off with the absolute basics and progress, step by step, through to some of the more technical aspects. Each camera operation or photography lesson is followed by a demonstration then a practical session.
After the camera and outdoor practical photography sessions we review the images and offer constructive feedback. This is followed by photo-editing tutorial where we will show you how to get the very best from your your photographs.
During these courses you will learn:
- How to get off the Fully Auto snapshot setting
- When to use the Auto, P, S, TV,A, AV or Manual settings
- How to get the picture you see in you visualise.
- How to get all your pictures sharp
- How to deliberately get a blurry background
- How to get the correct exposure in difficult lighting
- All about ISO and which setting to use in which lighting
- Which camera kit to buy and how to save money
- The difference between image size and image quality
- The different White Balance settings
- The Motor Drive and Self Timer
- How to use the flash settings and fill in flash.
- How to avoid out of focus or blurry pictures
- An explanation of how different lenses work
- Composition & the correct use of the zoom lens.
- How to use the very special universal zoom

A really wonderful photography course with excellent one to one tuition. I feel much more confident using my camera & I'm very pleased with all my photographs.
This was a really great day. I became aware of photographs I had never seen before and I started exploring the photographers view of the world by finding newer and better viewpoints.
Having spent over a year using my camera only on full auto to take photos I decided I needed help to figure out all the settings I should be using and I'm so pleased I did.
This photography course explained all the settings and the best picture composition tips I needed. Glen ensured no one left without all of their questions being answered- Including me.
I'm just dropping you this note to say how much I enjoyed today. The course answered all my questions and has given me the confidence to go out and use my camera properly. Today has turned my box of expensive gadgets into top class photography equipment. Thanks!
This has been a great photography course and I know I can now take photographs instead of just snaps. Highly Recommended.
A good balance of technical and practical information with enough detail for the experienced camera user without losing the beginners interest. A great course for getting the best out of my DSLR.
I've really enjoyed this course and I look forward to putting it into practice. I'm not scared to use my camera anymore. Glen explained everything very well - even to such a non technical person like myself.
I knew some of the technical side of photography, having had a camera for a while, but I wanted to know about composition and how to frame a photograph. I've had an excellent day and learnt a lot. It will certainly make a difference to my photography.
This day has made me so much more aware of the points I need to think about when taking pictures. The theory was well explained with a good combination of techniques , examples and trouble shooting tips. The course maintained a good pace with just the right amount of information and practical exercises.
