Writing with light

Portrait by window light

Portrait & Night Time Photography Course 17th October
This very popular combined course on Sunday October 17th will feature a portrait photography session in the afternoon followed by a low light and night time photography course in the evening. Your own tripod would be helpful for the night time session but we do have a couple of spares. A light supper is provided.
During this photography course you will learn how to take:
- A portrait outside without flash
- A portrait outside with flash
- A portrait indoors without flash
- A portrait indoors with flash
- A portrait indoors by window light
- A moody low key portrait
- A light high key portrait
- A portrait indoors by studio flash
- A portrait indoors by off camera flash
- A silhouette indoors by using flash
- A portrait indoors by candle light
- Buildings by street light
- Halloween pictures
- Firework Pictures
- Car light trail pictures
A separate flashgun with a flash extension lead is a really useful accessory for this course but not essential as we will be able to demonstrate using our equipment. I also recommend a remote cable release. See MyMemory for details.
Try doing a search for flash extension cord on eBay or visit a your local camera store.
Portrait Photography Session
This session will show you how to take well lit and attractive portrait photographs by available light and flash indoors. We will show you how to create a home studio setup using inexpensive accessories for that professional look. You will be advised on which lens to use, the best camera settings and have the opportunity to try additional flashguns. We'll even show you how to add character to a portrait or produce that romantic soft focus look. The portrait session blends into the low light course with the chance to take photographs by candlelight.
Low Light & Night Time Photography Session
This session will deal with taking photographs indoors without flash and outside using just street lighting. We will take a portrait using only candle light and table lamps.
There will be a demonstration on taking great firework and scary Halloween pictures plus instructions on combining flash and low light together. We will also show you how to photograph car lighting trails plus pictures of buildings outside.
Who can attend?
This intensive course is mainly aimed at students who have attended one of our previous beginners courses but novices can also join.
Many photographers tend to use their camera on the full auto setting and want to learn how to get much better pictures from their new camera by using the other settings.
All the courses start off with the absolute basics and progress, step by step, through to some of the more technical aspects. Each theoretical lesson is followed by a demonstration then a practical session.
At the end of the first portrait photography session the images are put onto a PC for viewing, constructive criticism and there is a short photo editing tutorial. After this we travel the short distance to Kibworth where we will take picture of:
- Buildings by street light
- Halloween pictures
- Car trail picture

What to look for in good tripod
Ideally a good tripod should be sturdy, tall enough when extended but short when closed for ease of transportation. The sturdiest models tend to be heavy, but if you don't carry one with you it is pointless, so a fairly lightweight option is better. The very best ones are carbon fibre and silly prices.
I personally like the Manfrotto models but they are fairly expensive. Here are a few suggestions from www.7dayshop.com to get you started but if you have a camera store nearby I would go and compare tripods for yourself. We do have some spares of various shapes and sizes.
Suggested Tripods ( left to right )
Manfrotto - Modo Maxi Tripod 785B - £42.99 Delivered ( Compacts Only)
Konig Photo - Traveller Tripod Ref. KN-TRIPOD19 £7.99 Delivered

A fantastic addition to the standard photography course. I wanted to know which settings to use for portraits and low light photography and this course covered everything.

Another enjoyable day. I don't think I will ever use direct flash again. I would certainly recommend this course and I can't wait to go out and put it into practice my new skills.
Gordan Catchpole
This was an extension to the basic Digital SLR course. Glen's simple explanations followed by practical examples and practice work really well. I'm much more confident now in taking photographs in a variety of situations.
Marc Darling
A fantastic day and I have learnt so much. The practical aspects are really enforced by the theory. I feel in a very good position to take my photography onwards with the re-assurance that I can contact Glen for some excellent support and advice. Thank you.
Claire Vink
I'm an 18 year old student and I was worried about fitting in with the different age groups but everyone was very friendly and welcoming. This made me feel much more confident about taking photographs and I wasn't afraid to ask for any help. I loved my day and it was definitely worth flying over from Northern Ireland for the course.
Lydia Thomas
I wanted to learn how to get the best out of my camera and every question was answered. A very good course which I would recommend to anyone who wants to learn about their camera. There is so much to learn in one day.

Many thanks to Jackie and yourself for your hospitality by opening your lovely home up for the brilliant course. I've thoroughly enjoyed myself and I’ve learnt an awful lot. I just need to be able to apply it now with lots of practice! Hopefully see you again for another course!
